Clips is a Sixth Sample dynamics plugin that switches between a clipper, a compressor and a gate in one interface, across three bands.

What it does

Clips is a dynamics plugin that lets you "quickly switch between a clipper, a compressor, and a gate" in one window. It adds a three-band multiband stage, stereo modes and detailed visual feedback, aimed at mixing and mastering.

Three modes: clip, compress and gate, selectable in the same interface, with attack and release times shown in milliseconds.
Multiband: split the signal into three bands with crossover sliders, adjustable slope steepness, a linear-phase filter option and pre or post multiband modes.
Stereo modes: Left/Right or Mid/Side processing.
Loudness tools: transient shaping, a Maximize button for extra loudness, fixed hard clipping at 0 dB and oversampling.
Visualizers: input and output meters, a transfer curve, a spectrum analyzer and a configurable oscilloscope.
Workflow: master input, output and mix sliders, Bypass All, double-click reset and 10 colour themes.

The current version is 2.1.2 (per KVR). The full-featured trial mutes the audio for a couple of seconds every 40 seconds. Buyers also get lifetime access to Sixth Sample's 6th Club pay-what-you-want library.

When to use it

Clips is the pick when you want clipping, compression and gating in one cheap plugin. Compared with StandardCLIP and KClip 3, which focus on clipping alone, it adds a compressor, a gate and three-band processing, so one instance can tame and push a drum bus. Unlike Venn Audio's Free Clip 2 it is paid, but it adds multiband, Mid/Side, transient shaping and a spectrum analyzer and oscilloscope for checking what the clipping does. It suits quick bus and loudness work in one window better than detailed clipper tone shaping, where the dedicated clippers go further.

Best for: drum buses, bass transients, quick multiband clipping and getting extra loudness on a mix bus.
Genres: EDM, hip-hop, trap and pop.
Look elsewhere if: you want a single focused clipper with several clipping shapes; StandardCLIP or KClip 3 are more specialised.
