Whirl by Sinevibes

Whirl is a barber-pole phaser from Sinevibes based on a Bode frequency shifter, with peaks and notches that seem to move endlessly up or down.

Up to three sequential stages add resonant filtering, with tempo-synced rate and bipolar stereo phase offset, for $29.

Best for: Guitars, Keys & Synths, Drums, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Rock & Indie, Ambient & Cinematic.

Keywords: phaser, tempo-synced, drums, surgical, electric guitar, extreme, mixing, samples & loops, simple, smooth, sound design, pads.

What it does

Whirl is a barber-pole phaser: its sweep seems to rise or fall forever. Instead of a standard all-pass phaser it uses a Bode frequency shifter model, so the peaks and notches keep moving in one direction, each sweep morphing smoothly into the next, "like an audible illusion."

A demo version is available, and v2 is a free upgrade for owners of the first version. Version 2 added the tempo sync and the bipolar stereo control.

When to use it

Whirl is the pick when you want one specific effect: a phaser sweep that never turns around. Unlike Soundtoys PhaseMistress, which models classic back-and-forth phasers with many styles and tone options, Whirl does one job with a small set of controls and costs much less. Compared with Eventide Instant Flanger Mk II or Soundtoys MicroShift it is more about constant motion than thickening or doubling. Its tempo sync, from a sixteenth note to 16 bars, makes it practical for rises and falls that line up with a song section.

What producers say

Coverage is light; the writers who discuss Whirl like its distinctive sound and simple, performance-friendly design.
