Gold Clip

vst3s Score 8.9/10 · rated #3 of 10 clippers
Modeled on the sound of clipping high-end mastering converters, a loudness trick mastering engineers have used for years. It stays remarkably clean even when it is working hard.
It is the priciest clipper here and is sold as the Gold Clip Pack, with a rent-to-own option and a 30-day trial.
Best for: Mastering, Mix Bus. Genres: Hip-Hop & Trap, Pop, Electronic & EDM.
Keywords: mastering, bus processing, hardware emulation, mix bus, drums, full mix, rent-to-own, tape, A/B compare, clean, linear-phase, modern, parallel processing, single-band, smooth.
What it does
Gold Clip is mastering engineer Ryan Schwabe's clipper, modelled on two of his favourite hardware mastering converters. The Gold Clip Pack includes the full mastering version and Gold Clip Track, a lighter version for tracks and buses.
- Clipper: Modern and Classic algorithms tuned to match the hardware, plus a Hard mode.
- Gold: "the compressor you never knew existed", an instantaneous, tape-like loudness effect with no attack or release artefacts.
- Alchemy 2: a "digital tape" stage that pulls the mids and highs down by up to 2 dB after clipping to soften its harmonics.
- Box Tone: a linear-phase EQ that smooths the top end and filters out ultrasonic content.
- Extras: a Clip Clock that shows where in the song the heaviest clipping happens, a true parallel mixer with unlinked dry and wet, and A/B comparison.

When to use it
Gold Clip is the premium, character choice: it's more a converter-style loudness processor than a plain clipper, and it's the most expensive clipper here. The Gold and Alchemy stages are what set it apart from StandardCLIP or KClip.
- Best for: mastering and the mix bus, ahead of a limiter; Gold Clip Track for drums and buses when CPU matters.
- Sound: fuller and heavier than a transparent clipper, with a slightly darker top end.
- Try it first: there's a 30-day trial and a rent-to-own option.
What producers say
Engineers mostly praise the Gold control, which gives loudness that feels like pushing a console rather than digital clipping.
- Plugin Nerds said the Gold and Alchemy stages together do something you can't get by stacking conventional tools, and praised Gold Clip Track on drums.
- Gearspace users liked how it handles low end and found it more hardware-like than Acustica's Ash.
- Criticisms: the price, a rolled-off, dark top end some users found too much, and heavy CPU use in the mastering version.
