SRX ELECTRIC PIANO brings the electric piano and clavinet sounds of Roland's SRX wave expansion boards into a plugin.

It has 50 patches with multi-velocity sampling on every note; it comes with Roland Cloud membership.

Best for: Keys & Synths. Genres: Pop, R&B & Soul, Jazz, Acoustic & Classical.

Keywords: electric piano, hardware emulation, sample-based, vintage, licensed emulation, polyphonic, 70s, nostalgic.

What it does

SRX ELECTRIC PIANO is Roland's software version of its last SRX wave expansion board, sold as "Soul-Infused EPs and Clavinets from the SRX Series." Roland says several keyboards were sampled in detail for expression and playability, and the plugin wraps those samples in the JV/XV-style synth engine.

Patches: 50 ready-to-play electric piano and clavinet patches.
Waveforms: 1,251 in total: 168 SRX waves from the board plus the 1,083 standard JV/XV waves.
Sampling: every note sampled, with multi-velocity switching for dynamics.
Engine: 128-voice polyphony and deep synth parameters for reshaping the patches.
Effects: 78 multi-effect types, plus 3 chorus and 5 reverb types.
Digital Circuit Behavior: Roland's DCB modelling, meant to capture the character of the original hardware.
User banks: 128 memories per bank, with as many user banks as you want.

Roland's page offers it through Roland Cloud membership, and retailers also sell it as a Lifetime Key.

When to use it

SRX ELECTRIC PIANO is the pick when you want the late-90s Roland ROMpler take on electric piano and clavinet parts. Compared with Keyscape it has far less detail and nuance, but it loads fast and sits easily in a dense mix. Against Addictive Keys and Waves Electric 88 Piano, it offers clavinets as well as EPs and a full synth engine for layering and reshaping, while those focus on a more realistic, modern sampled EP. Its sound is tied to the hardware era, so it fits best when that character is what you want.

Best for: vintage-ROMpler EP and clav parts, quick layering, and recreating tracks made on Roland JV/XV hardware.
Genres: pop, R&B, soul, funk and jazz.
Look elsewhere if: you want a deep, realistic EP; Keyscape or Roland's own EARTH Electric Piano go much further, and Addictive Keys is a cheaper realistic option.
