What it does
JV-1080 is Roland's software recreation of its 1994 PCM rack module, the "PCM Heaven" of 90s studios. Roland's aim is the look, feel and factory patches of the original, with more effects, waveforms and voices on top.
- Waveforms: 1,083 waveforms, against the 448 of the original hardware.
- Polyphony: 128 voices, double the original.
- Effects: 78 multi-effect types (the hardware had 40), plus 3 chorus and 5 reverb algorithms.
- Filters and modulation: two added time-variant low-pass filters, a step LFO and enhanced matrix control.
- Editing: full graphical control of the parameters, instead of the small hardware screen.
- Patches and banks: Patch and Rhythm Set tones, 128 patches per bank, and new user banks can be created.
- Sample rates: 44.1 to 192 kHz.
Roland's page offers it through Roland Cloud membership and does not show a separate price.
When to use it
JV-1080 is the pick for the specific 90s PCM sound: the pianos, strings, pads, basses and rhythm sets heard on many records of that decade, ready to play from presets. Compared with Omnisphere 3, it has a far smaller library and a simpler engine, but it gives you that era's ROMpler character directly instead of a modern sound design toolkit. Unlike Serum 2 or Pigments 7, it is not built for designing new sounds from oscillators; editing goes through the classic tone, filter and envelope structure. Next to Roland's own XV-5080, it has a similar waveform set and the same effects count, so the choice comes down to which patch library you know and want. Since it comes with Roland Cloud, it makes most sense if you already subscribe.
- Best for: authentic 90s ROMpler pads, keys, strings, basses and drums.
- Genres: R&B, pop, hip-hop, dance, house and film music.
- Look elsewhere if: you want modern synthesis or deep sound design; Pigments 7 or Serum 2 suit that better.
What producers say
Press coverage treats JV-1080 as one of the highlights of Roland Cloud, with the main doubt being the subscription model rather than the sound.
- MusicTech called it a kind of "best of Roland up to 1994" in its Roland Cloud review, and said stepping through the presets was moving.
- Criticisms: MusicTech raised no faults with the plugin itself, but noted worry about losing access if subscription payments lapse.
