What it does

XY-Transfer is Rob Papen's creative multi-effect built from blocks that you play with XY pads. Its centre is a filter bank with 36 filter types, and each block's pad movements can be recorded and played back, so the effect changes over time without drawing automation.

Effect blocks: three block slots, each loaded with one of five effects: Filter Bank, Comb Filter, Shaper, Room or Gater.
Filter Bank: 36 filter types, including an analog-modelled filter option.
XY pads: one XY field per block for moving several parameters at once; movements can be recorded and played back in several different ways.
Stereo delay: a flexible stereo delay that can be placed in different positions among the blocks.
Lo-fi: a lo-fi effect for degrading and roughening the signal.
Combinations: blocks can be combined with each other and with the delay, which Rob Papen says makes "very complex effect types" possible.

When to use it

XY-Transfer is a pick for performing filter, comb, gate and room effects by hand on XY pads and recording those moves. Compared with Effectrix2, it has no step sequencer of effects; you shape changes with the pads instead of painting patterns. It is smaller in scope than Multipass, which offers modular routing and many more effect modules, and it has less modulation depth than Infiltrator 2. It is also cheaper than all three.

Best for: moving filter sweeps, gated rhythms, comb tones and lo-fi textures on synths, loops and drums.
Genres: electronic music, EDM, techno, ambient and sound design.
Look elsewhere if: you want step-sequenced glitch effects (Effectrix2), modular effect chains (Multipass) or deep modulation-driven sound design (Infiltrator 2).
