What it does

RP-PAN is a free creative panning plugin that Rob Papen released in 2022 as a gift for the company's 25th anniversary. Instead of an LFO, you move the sound by hand on a sphere, and the plugin records the movement.

RP-PAN is free from the developer's site.

When to use it

RP-PAN moves a sound around the stereo field over time, so it is a movement effect rather than a width tool. Compared with Ozone Imager or Wider, it does not widen or narrow anything; it changes position. Compared with Cableguys PanCake, another free auto-panner built around LFO curves, RP-PAN is more hands-on, with recorded sphere gestures, tempo-based spring-back and a Doppler option. Compared with Soundtoys PanMan, it is free but has fewer rhythmic pattern options.

What producers say

Writers welcomed it as a simple but clever free tool; no criticisms came up in the coverage.
