BLUE-III by Rob Papen

BLUE-III is Rob Papen's cross-fusion synth, combining subtractive and FM synthesis with Karplus-Strong string modeling and built-in samples.

It loads up to six user samples per preset, has an XY pad and over 5,000 presets, and costs $149.

Best for: Keys & Synths, Bass, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Pop, Ambient & Cinematic.

Keywords: FM, subtractive, lush, preset-driven, drag-and-drop routing, modulation matrix, pads, plucks, sequencer, modern, retro, advanced, analog-sounding, arpeggiator, cinematic, electric piano, leads, monophonic, skeuomorphic, sound design, surgical, granular, warm.

What it does

BLUE-III is the third version of Rob Papen's "cross-fusion" synth, which mixes FM and subtractive synthesis in one engine. Version 3 adds string modelling and user samples, and borrows audio-engine work from Rob Papen's BIT synth.

It ships with over 5,000 presets and a redesigned GUI in several sizes. A demo is available.

When to use it

BLUE-III is the better pick when you want FM bells, keys and plucks that can also be filtered like a subtractive synth, backed by a very large preset library. Compared with Omnisphere 3, it has far less sampled content but is lighter and cheaper. Pigments 7 and Phase Plant offer more modern drag-and-drop modulation, while BLUE-III keeps a fixed six-oscillator FM layout with algorithm control that suits classic FM sounds. Next to Rob Papen's own BLADE-2, it is more of an all-rounder, adding string models and user samples to the FM core. Forum users describe a range from D-50-style retro tones to modern sounds.

What producers say

Users praise BLUE's character, presets and developer support; the few complaints concern early VST3 and MPE issues in version 3.
