What it does
LX480 Dual-Engine Reverb is Relab Development's recreation of the Lexicon 480L, the digital reverb heard on countless records from the mid-'80s to the early '90s. Relab describes it as the only sample-accurate dual-engine recreation of the hardware, including the random modulation in the tails.
- Algorithms: the 480L's Hall, Random Hall, Room, Plate and Ambience reverbs, plus a Random Hall HD version running in 32-bit float.
- Dual engine: two algorithms at once in four routing configurations (single, cascade, mono split and stereo split), as on the hardware.
- Extra algorithms: Twin Delays for doubling, ping-pong and echo patterns, and Panorama for stereo widening, mono summing, phase inversion and channel swapping.
- Two workflows: Hardware Mode mirrors the 480L's LARC remote; Advanced Mode adds an interactive screen, visual feedback and extra sound shaping such as Shape and Spread, a chorus engine and a filter section.
- Output: choose digital or modelled analog output rendering.
- Presets: hundreds of presets, plus a free bonus pack of 200+ for EDM and '80s synthwave.
The full version (LX480 Complete) is often discounted; LX480 Essentials uses the same algorithms but offers four ready-made reverbs with limited editing. There's a trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

When to use it
LX480 is the choice when you want the 480L itself: dense, smooth, slightly glossy halls and plates that sound like classic records. VintageVerb gets into the same era with lots of flavours for a fraction of the price, and SP2016 covers a different vintage unit; LX480 is the most faithful to one specific machine, with the dual engine letting you stack, say, a plate and a delay in one instance. Compared with Pro-R 2 it's less about precise modern control and more about period character.
- Best for: lead vocals, snares and drums, pads and synths, and anything that should sound like an '80s or '90s record.
- Genres: pop, R&B, rock, synthwave, electronic and ambient.
- Look elsewhere if: you're on a tight budget (VintageVerb, or LX480 Essentials), you need natural rooms or real spaces (Valhalla Room, Altiverb), or CPU is tight on big sessions.
- Tip: if you only need a few classic 480L sounds without editing, LX480 Essentials is a much cheaper way in.
What producers say
Buyers and reviewers rate it among the best 480L emulations; the main complaints are price at full list and CPU use.
- Plugin Boutique users rate it 4.8 out of 5 from 61 ratings, praising the rich, deep '80s sound; some find it CPU-heavy.
- Mathew Vaughan (9.4/10) found it clean and free of unwanted artefacts on percussion, where he felt Valhalla reverbs sound "chattery"; ease of use scored lowest.
- Bobby Owsinski highlighted that it models the 480L's random modulation, which the post says most emulations failed to capture, plus the LARC-style editing.
