What it does
Expanse is a free noise and drone generator from Puremagnetik that can be spectrally blurred, pitched and filtered. The developer calls it "a simple yet versatile tool" for sweeping backdrops, low drones and other textures, inspired by Larum's ambient album Into a Bright Land.
- Noise source: generates filtered noise as the raw material for the texture.
- Pitch: layers pitch-shifted copies of the noise, from low drones upward.
- Spectral blur and freeze: smear and hold the sound into a smooth bed.
- Filter and reverb: shape the tone and place the texture in a space.
- Controls: seven knobs, Filter, Stasis, Shift, Blend, Space, Size and Output.
Version 1.0 is free.

When to use it
Expanse is a single-purpose texture generator: it gets a background bed going in seconds, but it is not a playable synth. Compared with Omnisphere 3 or Pigments 7, it has no oscillators, envelopes or modulation to speak of, only a handful of controls for noise, pitch, blur and space. That makes it far quicker than building a drone in Vital, though much less flexible. It is unrelated to Echelon's EXPANSE.
- Best for: background noise beds, risers, low drones and ambient pads under a mix.
- Genres: ambient, experimental, film and game scoring.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a playable synth with melody and envelopes; Vital is free and does much more.
What producers say
Feedback is thin but sees it as easy to use, with one stability report on Windows.
- DBS Institute Insider found it "nice and simple" but said "there's a lot you can do", and called it ideal for drones.
- KVR users rate it 3 out of 5 from 1 review (2025), liking the sound but reporting crashes in Cakewalk on Windows.
