P455 MDN Sidecar captures the analog summing and 2-bus chain of mixing engineer Marc Daniel Nelson: console summing, a tube line amp, a stepped EQ, a bus compressor and two converter emulations.
It includes the P450 MDN EQ for individual tracks, for $225.
Best for: Mix Bus, Mastering, Drum Bus. Genres: all genres.
Keywords: bus processing, mix bus, mixing, tube, hardware emulation, glue, low latency, American console, full mix, metering, tight, transformer, wide, CPU-light, drum bus, gritty, high latency, mastering, oversampling, punchy, sidechain input, standalone app, utility, vintage, visual feedback, zero-latency.
What it does
P455 MDN Sidecar models the mix bus chain of Marc Daniel Nelson, a Grammy-nominated mixing engineer: a vintage API sidecar built from the first eight channels of the console formerly in Record Plant's Studio B in Sausalito, plus his tube line amp, stereo EQ and compressor. Nelson calls the converter settings "the magic of the P455."
- Summing: 2 CH, a single stereo bus that is tighter and grittier, or 8 CH, four stereo stems across eight channels for a wider, deeper sound with a more relaxed centre.
- Converters: two A-to-D emulations: Willie (tight, punchy and forward) and Atticus (laid-back, velvety and wide), with MOD1 and MOD2 variants in 8 CH mode when the line amp is on.
- Input and line amp: Input of ±12 dB into the transformer and Bias of ±36 dB to run the stage from cool to hot; the tube, transformer and inductor line amp can be switched off, leaving it in circuit with cold tubes.
- Stepped EQ: four bands with ±12 dB gain and proportional Q; Lo and Hi have adjustable frequencies and a peak/shelf switch, Lo-Mid and Hi-Mid use fixed points, and a gain multiplier scales everything by 1, 0.5 or 0.25.
- Filter banks: stepped high-pass at 20, 40, 70 or 90 Hz and low-pass at 20, 15, 10 or 5 kHz, independent of the EQ.
- 2-bus compressor: fast-to-slow attack and release with auto modes, ratios of 1.2:1 and 1.8:1, an 80 Hz sidechain filter and a Class A transformer output; it listens to the raw input, so colour settings don't change the gain reduction.
- Character and metering: Stage Focus for soundstage position, a Hammer intensity circuit, Step or Smooth analog variance, polarity invert, VU input and output needles, peak readouts and a gain reduction meter.
The P450 MDN EQ, a standalone version of the same four-band EQ for single tracks, is included with its own license. This is version 1.6.0 (August 2025). It has zero latency with the EQ off; the oversampled EQ adds latency. A fully working 15-day trial is available.

When to use it
P455 MDN Sidecar is a finishing chain for the end of the mix, not a strip for each track. Compared with Scheps Omni Channel or SSL Native Channel Strip 2, it has fewer modules and no gate or de-esser, but adds console summing, a tube line amp and converter colour aimed at the 2-bus. It is closer in spirit to the API Vision Channel Strip Collection, though it focuses on one engineer's stereo bus chain instead of API's channel modules. Unlike bx_console SSL 4000 E, it does not model a full console channel with per-track variation.
- Best for: mix bus and stem summing colour, light glue compression and quick 2-bus finishing.
- Genres: any.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a channel strip for individual tracks; Scheps Omni Channel or SSL Native Channel Strip 2 suit that.
- Tip: Tape Op suggests starting with 2 CH summing for a cleaner result, using the compressor subtly, and Shift-clicking the Input stage for automatic level matching.
What producers say
Reviewers and users rate it highly as an all-in-one mix bus chain.
- Tape Op (Matt Anderson) called it a capable mix bus replacement that can stand in for several plugins, praising the EQ, the converter choice and the developer's support, and said "even applying half a dB of gain reduction" helps.
- KVR users rate it 5 out of 5 from 2 reviews (2024), praising the glue, depth and width, the precise controls and low CPU; one preferred it to UAD's API Vision Channel Strip.
- Criticisms: Tape Op found the signal flow complex enough to need the manual, warned it is easy to overcook at the end of the chain, and noted some imaging shifts at certain settings.
