P252 MDN Diode by Pulsar Modular

P252 MDN Diode models a rare 1968 Neve 2252 germanium diode-bridge compressor, the type used at Wessex Studios in the punk era.

It adds drive and tone switches, a side-chain filter and parallel mix to the original controls, for $165.

Best for: Drums, Drum Bus, Vocals, Bass, Guitars, Mix Bus. Genres: Rock & Indie, Metal, Pop.

Keywords: diode-bridge, germanium, bus processing, sidechain input, 60s, bass, drums, low latency, vocals, British console, electric guitar, feedback, gritty, hardware emulation, parallel processing, drum bus, external sidechain, feed-forward, full mix, mix bus, mixing, oversampling, room mics, single-band, stereo-linked, transformer, zero-latency.

What it does

P252 MDN Diode is a model of the Neve 2252, a 1968 Rupert Neve compressor built in a short run before silicon replaced germanium, made with engineer Marc Daniel Nelson. Its tagline is "Attitude, Aggression and Power," and it is meant as a tone shaper as much as a compressor; the circuit was modelled algorithmically and tuned by ear rather than with static curves.

This is version 1.0.12 (August 2026). It has a 15-day fully working trial.

When to use it

P252 MDN Diode is the pick for a dark, gritty diode-bridge sound. Compared with the 1176 Classic Limiter Collection and CLA-76, it has the germanium diode-bridge colour and stepped response times from 75 ms rather than fast FET attack, and it adds a side-chain filter and parallel mix. It is more of a single-character tone shaper than the Distressor, which offers more modes for any source. Unlike Pulsar's own P11 Abyss, it models one specific vintage unit rather than covering every topology. It is the wrong choice for clean control, where Pro-C 3 or TDR Kotelnikov are far more neutral.
