What it does

P11 Abyss is Pulsar Modular's flagship compressor, which the developer calls "a chameleon audio compressor." The idea is one plugin that can go from ultra clean, mastering-grade compression to heavily coloured, hardware-like behaviour, without needing to know the classic topologies.

Topology coverage: covers the sound of VCA, opto and vari-mu compression in one design.
Three circuits: SOUL, PSI and O2, the developer's own circuit designs that set the character.
Core controls: threshold, ratio, attack, release and makeup gain, with stereo Link as on/off or a percentage.
Groove: a Groove option for more musical attack and release; it works when attack or release is set in milliseconds.
Clipper and limiter: an integrated clipper with its own release and routing options, and a brickwall limiter with release control.
Colour and EQ: two transformers for colouration, input and output EQ bands, and sidechain filter options.
Workflow: external sidechain, a Delta function to hear what is removed, zero latency without oversampling, full automation, and Bright, Gray and Dark themes.

When to use it

P11 Abyss is the better pick when you want one compressor to cover the whole range from transparent to dirty. Compared with Pro-C 3, it feels more like analog hardware and adds transformers, a clipper and a brickwall limiter, but it has less metering and fewer clearly labelled styles. Unlike The Glue or the SSL G-Master Buss Compressor, it is not locked to one VCA flavour and can move into opto and vari-mu territory. It is much pricier than TDR Kotelnikov, which stays clean only. With its clipper and limiter it can handle a full bus or mastering dynamics stage on its own.

Best for: bus and master compression where you want to switch between clean and coloured styles, vari-mu style glue, and adding presence.
Genres: any; it is a general mixing and mastering compressor.
Look elsewhere if: you want a cheap, simple compressor or a faithful model of one unit; the 1176 Classic Limiter Collection or LA-2A Leveler Collection are quicker for that.
