Phonec3 is a two-oscillator analog-style synth inspired by the logo music of vintage VHS tapes, built for warm, drifting lo-fi tones and ambient textures.

Its Melt system adds pitch and amplitude drift, and it includes step sequencers and built-in effects, for $89.

What it does

Phonec3 is the third version of Psychic Modulation's "analog flux synthesizer", a synth built around decay and imperfection. The developer drew on the hazy synth scores of worn-out VHS tapes, aiming at vintage analog tones, lo-fi synthscapes and ambient textures.

Oscillators: two oscillators that combine in Mix, Ring, X-wave and logic modes (with adjustable switching points), plus a sub oscillator and several noise types.
Filters: a cascading lowpass of up to 4 stages, a 303-style Acid filter, the Milk filter and a post highpass, with self-oscillation.
Drive: saturation placed before or after the filter.
Melt system: drifting pitch and amplitude fluctuations that give a warped, unstable, aged sound.
Sequencers: a 16-step note sequencer (plus or minus one octave), a 16-step mod sequencer for amplitude and cutoff, a scale mode with pitch-wheel quantizer, and an arpeggiator.
Modulation: 3 LFOs with BPM sync, keytracking and retrigger, an HFO for audio-rate FM, 3 envelopes, and aftertouch and mod wheel control.
Effects and patches: 3-band parametric EQ, stereo chorus and a dub-style echo with two filters; randomisation and sub-presets per section, factory presets, Phonec2 bank import and GUI scaling.

The current version is 3.0.5. The demo has occasional sound dropouts.

When to use it

Phonec3 is the better pick when you want built-in wear and wobble rather than a clean analog recreation. Compared with Diva, it has a simpler two-oscillator voice and no faithful models of classic synths, but its Melt drift, sequencers and dub echo get to nostalgic, slightly broken sounds faster. Unlike Vital or Serum 2, it cannot load custom wavetables or waveforms, so it suits mood and texture more than modern sound design. For a focused character synth, its price is a sticking point for some KVR reviewers.

Best for: lo-fi leads and pads, VHS-style intros, ambient sequences and acid lines.
Genres: lo-fi, synthwave, ambient, chillwave and electronic.
Look elsewhere if: you need a deep modulation matrix, custom waveforms or a clean modern sound; Vital or Serum 2 fit better, and Diva for faithful analog.
Tip: push the Melt control for organic pitch and filter drift, and pair it with a tape delay or stereo flanger, as KVR reviewers suggest.

Users like its warbly, washed-out character; the main reservations are the price and some harsh tones.

KVR users rate it 4 out of 5 from 2 reviews, both from 2012 and so about the original Phonec; one praised its "washed out, detuned 'VHS' lofi sound".
