A delay built on variable sample rate delay lines, the larger follow-up to the Lexicon PSP 42.
It adds filters, an LFO and envelope follower, ducking with sidechain input, delay gating, and spring and plate reverb simulation.

What it does
PSP 85 is "the product of our eternal fascination with the endless possibilities offered by variable sample rate delay lines." PSP calls it the big brother of the Lexicon PSP 42, extending that design with filtering, modulation and reverb.
- Delay lines: real-time multipoint resamplers for delay time control, predelay for rhythmic patterns, output panning and delay gating.
- Modulation: an LFO with five waveforms that can sync to song position, plus an envelope follower.
- Filter: a 12 dB/octave filter with cutoff, resonance and saturation, with flexible routing and resonance modulation.
- Ducking: automatic ducking with optional sidechain input, and input muting for chaining delays.
- Reverb: spring and plate reverb simulation, with support up to 192 kHz and MIDI automation.

When to use it
PSP 85 is a sound-design delay rather than a tape emulation. Its closest comparisons on the site are Eventide UltraTap, Native Instruments Replika XT and FabFilter Timeless 3; choose PSP 85 over them for its Lexicon-style variable sample rate delay lines, envelope follower and built-in spring and plate simulation.
- Best for: modulated, filtered and ducked delays, rhythmic patterns and experimental textures.
- Genres: electronic, ambient, cinematic and experimental rock.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a clean, modern interface; reviewers found the GUI cramped.
- Standout: variable sample rate delay lines in the tradition of the Lexicon PSP 42, with an envelope follower and filter.
What producers say
Computer Music liked the sound and presets but not the busy interface.
- Computer Music (2010): said it "feels and sounds like a robust, old-school bit of kit" with futuristic innards, praising the presets and sidechain ducking.
- Gripe: the same review found the interface cramped and the labels hard to read.
