DSM V3 is a spectral multiband dynamics processor from Pro Audio DSP that captures the spectral profile of one source and applies it to another.
It combines dynamic spectrum mapping, multiband compression and expansion, de-essing and a peak-only mastering limiter, for $100.
Best for: Mastering, Mix Bus, Vocals, Drum Bus. Genres: all genres.
Keywords: mastering, spectral, multi-band, vocals, bus processing, full mix, parallel processing, sidechain input, surgical, built-in analyzer, downward expansion, drum bus, dynamic, match EQ, mid/side, mix bus, built-in mix knob, mixing, subscription, transparent.
What it does
DSM V3 is the third version of Pro Audio DSP's Dynamic Spectrum Mapper, designed by Paul Frindle, whose earlier work includes SSL and Sony Oxford designs. It captures the spectral and dynamic profile of one sound and uses it as the target for dynamic processing of another, so you can "impress" one track's signature onto a different one.
- Capture and mapping: a capture system analyses a source's spectrum and dynamics and stores it as a curve; DSM then pushes the processed track towards that curve as the music changes.
- Many bands: the developer says it uses more than three times as many frequency bands as a conventional multiband compressor, so the control is much finer across the spectrum.
- Compress and Expand modes: compression with transient preservation, plus an Expand mode that is new in V3.
- De-essing: the narrow bands can be set up to catch sibilance and harsh upper frequencies.
- Mastering limiter: a separate limiter that can run on its own or with the DSM stage, and which the developer says stays transparent below -1 dBFS.
- Sidechain and parallel: an active spectrum sidechain with source selection for external or mixed keying, and a Dry/Wet control for parallel compression.
- Workflow: drag handles on the spectrum graph, import of DSM V2 curves and a GUI that scales from 50% to 150%.
This is version 3.7.0 (January 2026). It is sold through Plugin Alliance, has a 14-day trial, and is included in the CORE and PRO subscriptions.

When to use it
DSM V3 is the pick when you want frequency-aware dynamics that follow a target, rather than one gain-reduction stage. Compared with Pro-C 3 and TDR Kotelnikov, it works across many narrow bands at once and can follow a captured spectral profile, but it has none of their simple, broadband character controls. It is closer in purpose to soothe3, though DSM is built around matching a reference curve where soothe3 hunts for resonances automatically. Its narrow, interlinked bands make it strongest on detailed upper-mid and high material, and fiddlier to fine-tune than a normal multiband compressor.
- Best for: evening out vocals that move on and off the mic, de-essing, tonal matching on masters and buses, and mid/side mastering to lift high-end detail.
- Genres: general-purpose; it suits any style with exposed vocals or solo lines.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a quick, characterful compressor; Pro-C 3 or The Glue are faster, and soothe3 is simpler for taming harsh resonances.
- Tip: MusicTech found it works best on material with a lot of detail above about 1.5 kHz, such as vocals, solo instruments and lead synths.
What producers say
The one detailed review we read was very positive about its results on vocals and mastering, with the fiddly setup as the main reservation.
- MusicTech (Adam Crute, 2019) praised how it evens out tonal changes from a singer's mic distance, rated its de-essing above dedicated de-essers, and said it "earned itself a long-term stay in my plug-in rack."
- Criticisms: the interlinked bands make it fiddly to fine-tune, the bands get narrow at the top, and it "only comes into its own" on certain material. The review also flagged what was then a much higher price.
- Tip: the long release times, up to 30 seconds, give unusual results with narrow-band processing.
