What it does
VirtualCZ is "Inspired by an Iconic Series of Digital Synthesizers Made in the 1980s": the Casio CZ range, known for pads, basses and rave organs.
- Phase distortion engine: two CZ-style oscillators per voice, each with 8 wave shapes, plus ring and noise modulation; it models the CZ-1 and is compatible with CZ-101, CZ-1000, CZ-3000 and CZ-5000 patches.
- Envelopes: six loopable envelope generators per voice, switchable between CZ-style 8-stage MSEG and ADSR, with graphic displays.
- Modern additions: up to 8-voice unison with detune, stereo panning, two vintage chorus algorithms, microtonal tuning and parameter randomisation; 32-voice polyphony.
- Hardware support: acts as a SysEx editor/librarian for CZ hardware and loads thousands of CZ patches found online; over 200 presets included.
Expansion packs are sold separately.

When to use it
VirtualCZ is the site's option for Casio's phase distortion sound, which sits between the rival 1980s digital sound of Yamaha FM, covered by Native Instruments FM8, and close vintage emulations of analog classics such as TAL-U-NO-LX. Pick it for CZ pads, basses and organs, or if you own CZ hardware and want an editor.
- Best for: rave organs, digital pads and strings, squelchy basses and 80s synth-pop tones.
- Genres: house, techno, rave, synth-pop and lo-fi electronic.
- Look elsewhere if: you need a resizable, high-resolution interface or punchy modern sounds; users flag the small fixed GUI and one found the sound dated.
- Standout: an accurate CZ engine that doubles as a SysEx editor for the hardware.
What producers say
Users and reviewers praise its authentic CZ sound and easy programming; the non-resizable interface is the most common complaint.
- MusicTech (2014) gave it 10/10, calling it "a real gem of a synth," with one con: "the interface might be off-putting."
- KVR users (2014–2017) mostly liked it: one said "this totally captures the feel of it"; another felt the sound "more dated and wimpy than virtually any softsynth."
- Gripe: 2026 Plugin Boutique buyers repeatedly mention the fixed size: "The real big problem is its gui that you can’t resize."
