A four-oscillator synth with classic, wavetable and wave-terrain oscillators, a scale-aware note and chord sequencer, and five reorderable effects.

Scale Lock ties oscillators, a resonant "musical filter" and the sequencer to a chosen key, bringing ideas from the Scaler chord tools into a one-page synth.

Best for: Keys & Synths, Bass, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Pop, Hip-Hop & Trap.

Keywords: sequencer, wavetable, musical, steep learning curve, arpeggiator, basses, chord generator, classic, drag-and-drop routing, FM, plucks, preset-driven, sound design.

What it does

Carbon Electra 2 is the rebuilt successor to the 2015 Carbon Electra, now sold under the Scaler Music name: "Synth power meets musical intelligence." It keeps the one-page, four-oscillator layout and adds new oscillator types and key-aware tools.

Oscillators: four oscillators with Classic, Wavetable and Waveterrain modes; wave-terrain traces paths over a 3D surface, and you can load your own .png images as terrains. FM, hard sync and unison are available.
Scale Lock: pick a scale and root, and oscillators, the filter and the sequencer follow it.
Musical filter: Filter 2 is a bank of resonant band-pass filters tuned by Scale, Chord or Interval; Filter 1 has standard types, a morphing Vowel filter and envelope amount.
Sequencers: a scale-aware note and chord sequencer with inversions and parallel substitutions, plus a separate multi-shape modulation step sequencer.
Modulation and effects: three LFOs, two envelopes with drag-and-drop assignment, and five effect slots (delay, distortion, chorus, EQ, reverb) that can be reordered; 362 presets.

An upgrade price is available for Carbon Electra owners.

When to use it

Carbon Electra 2 is smaller than the deeper wavetable synths Serum 2 and Vital, and has fewer engines and less modulation than Pigments 7, but its scale-aware sequencer and filter are things those synths do not build in. Pick it if you want a one-page synth that helps you write riffs and chord patterns in key as well as design sounds.

Best for: basslines, arps, plucks and chord sequences that stay in key, and producers who already like the Scaler way of working.
Genres: house, techno, trance, EDM, pop and hip-hop.
Look elsewhere if: you want huge preset libraries or the deepest modulation; Serum 2, Vital or Pigments 7 go further, and some users find the presets weak.
Standout: wave-terrain oscillators with your own images, combined with Scale Lock across oscillators, filter and sequencer.

What producers say

Early reviews praise the sound and the scale features, with some notes on the learning curve, presets and fiddly sequencer controls.

Audio Plugin Guy (2026) gave it 4.8/5 and called it "an engaging and impressive successor to the original." Its one listed con: "Sequencer controls can be fiddly."
Plugin Boutique customers (2026): "The key lock is very useful. Has quite a learning curve."
Gripe: one 2026 buyer wrote "Good updates but lacks good sounding presets"; another heard minor crackling they put down to CPU.
