What it does

chipcrusher is a "Retro-Digital Multi-Effect" that runs any sound through simulated early digital audio hardware. The signal passes through four stages in order, each of which can be bypassed:

When to use it

chipcrusher is the pick when you want a sound that is recognisably console, phone or speech-chip, not just bit-reduced. Compared with Decimort 2, TAL-Bitcrusher or Kilohearts Bitcrush, it models specific codecs, noise floors and speakers instead of offering plain bit-depth and sample-rate controls. Against the rated multi-effects such as Super VHS, which aims at a general tape and VHS lo-fi feel, it is more specific to early digital gear. Unlike Infiltrator 2 or Effectrix2, it has no sequencing or modulation workflow; it is a fixed chain of degradation stages.

What producers say

Reviewers rate it highly for the accuracy and range of its emulations; the interface is the main complaint.
