Gem TAPEDESK by Overloud

Gem TAPEDESK combines a 2-inch 24-track tape machine with three classic analog console models (S4000, N80 and T88).

It recreates console-to-tape interaction for an analog mixing workflow. It costs about $146.48 (€129, regular €199).

Best for: Mix Bus, Drums, Mastering. Genres: all genres.

Keywords: tape, hardware emulation, mixing, electric guitar, full mix, heavy, mastering, metering, thick, vocals, warm, aggressive, bus processing, classic, colored, CPU-light, drums, fat, mix bus, resizable UI, subtle, transformer, wide.

What it does

Gem TAPEDESK combines a console channel and a multitrack tape machine in one plugin, so each track can get the full analog path. Overloud says it "recreates a full-analog mixing workflow", modelling how the console drives the tape.

KVR lists version 1.2.5. A trial is available, and a PDF manual can be downloaded.

When to use it

Gem TAPEDESK is the pick when you want console and multitrack tape colour in one insert on every channel. Compared with bx_console SSL 4000 E or the API Vision Channel Strip Collection, it has no EQ or dynamics section; its job is the sound of the desk and tape, not channel processing. Unlike Ampex ATR-102, which models a mastering deck in depth, it models a 24-track machine together with three console flavours. Sound On Sound found it more heavy-handed than some tape emulations, so it suits mixes that want obvious analog weight.

What producers say

Sound On Sound counted it among the standout plugins of the Gem range.
