What it does
Gem EQP brings three classic passive EQ units into one plugin, inspired by the Pultec EQP-1A, MEQ-5 and HLF-3C. Overloud calls it "passive EQ, beyond the original hardware", adding digital extras the originals never had.
- Low and High unit (EQP-1A style): separate boost and attenuation on the low band for bass depth, plus a treble boost and attenuation for smooth top end.
- Mid unit (MEQ-5 style): two boost bands and one cut band, with transformer-based harmonic coloration.
- High and Low Cut unit (HLF-3C style): passive high-pass and low-pass filtering with musical bandwidth choices.
- Clipper: a built-in programmable clipper for shaping transients and adding punch.
- Harmonic Matching: Overloud's technique for recreating the units' analog coloration, with a calibration control that changes how much harmonic content is generated.
- Display and workflow: a frequency response graph, a high oversampling mode, multilevel undo and redo, and a resizable interface.
KVR lists version 1.0.3. A trial is available.
When to use it
Gem EQP suits anyone who wants the whole Pultec family in one window rather than as separate plugins. Compared with the Pultec Passive EQ Collection and PuigTec EQs, it puts the low/high, mid and filter units in a single chain and adds a clipper and a response display those plugins don't have. Like the hardware, it is built for broad musical moves; it can't do the precise narrow cuts of Pro-Q 4 or the dynamic bands of TDR Nova. For three units in one, it is also a fair-priced way into this sound.
- Best for: broad boosts and cuts on drums, bass, synths, vocals and the mix bus, with optional transient punch from the clipper.
- Genres: all genres, especially rock, pop, hip-hop and electronic music with strong low end.
- Look elsewhere if: you need surgical or dynamic EQ; Pro-Q 4 or TDR Nova fit better.
