It adds band cue, continuous frequency selection and transformer simulation. It costs about $157.83 (€139).

Best for: Drums, Guitars, Vocals. Genres: all genres.

Keywords: transformer, classic, CPU-light, punchy, vocals, electric guitar, mixing, op-amp, drums, hardware emulation, resizable UI, undo/redo, A/B compare, aggressive, American console, kick, smooth, snare, static, tight.

What it does

Gem EQ550 is Overloud's model of a classic American console EQ built around custom op-amps. Its defining trait is proportional Q: the bandwidth narrows as gain increases, so small boosts sound broad and smooth while bigger moves get more focused and aggressive.

KVR lists version 1.1.6. A trial is available.

When to use it

Gem EQ550 is the pick when you want an EQ that adds punch and attitude rather than one that stays out of the way. Compared with Pro-Q 4 or TDR Nova it is far less precise, with no analyser, dynamic bands or surgical notch tools, but its proportional-Q curves get musical results fast on drums, guitars and vocals. Unlike the Pultec Passive EQ Collection, which suits broad, gentle shelving, it is an active, mid-forward EQ that cuts through. It is also very light on CPU, so it can sit on every channel of a mix.

What producers say

Reviewers rate it highly for tone and value; the main caveat is that it trades some accuracy for low CPU use.
