spiff
by oeksound · Transient Shaper · Adaptive, spectral
vst3s Score 8.6/10 · rated #3 of 10 transient shapers
An adaptive transient processor that works across the frequency spectrum. It can cut clicky, spiky transients in one range while boosting punch in another.
Engineers use it to soften harsh pick attack, tame overbearing consonants or add snap to dull drums.
Best for: Drums, Guitars, Vocals, Mix Bus. Genres: Rock & Indie, Metal, Pop, Hip-Hop & Trap.
Keywords: drums, corrective, vocals, electric guitar, harsh, punchy, samples & loops, spectral, bus processing, dynamic, enhancement, full mix, mix bus, mixing, percussion, rent-to-own, spacious, steep learning curve.
What it does
oeksound calls spiff an adaptive transient processor. It analyses the incoming signal, recognises transients and processes them with time- and frequency-specific controls, using dynamic filters instead of crossovers, so there are no multiband crossover artefacts.
- Cut mode: removes or softens unwanted transients: mouth clicks, harsh pick attack, spiky percussion or general harshness.
- Boost mode: turns it into a transient enhancer that adds attack to drums and brings sounds forward.
- Controls: Depth, Sharpness, Decay and Mix, plus five frequency bands (two shelving, three parametric) that set how sensitive each range is.
- Delta: lets you hear only what's being removed or added.
The current version is 1.4.4. There's a 20-day trial and a rent-to-own option.
When to use it
spiff works differently from every other plugin in the list. Instead of a full-band attack/sustain curve (SPL, Smack Attack, Transient Master) or a fixed crossover (Softube, Trans-X), it finds transients across the spectrum and treats them only where they occur. That makes it as much a corrective tool as a punch-adder. Note that Cut and Boost are a global mode, so cutting in one range and boosting in another needs two instances.
- Best for: taming harsh pick attack on guitars, mouth clicks and hard consonants on vocals, softening spiky loops, and adding snap to dense drum loops or mix buses.
- Genres: rock, metal, pop and hip-hop; also mastering and podcast/vocal editing.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a quick, obvious drum-punch tool; SPL Transient Designer Plus or DS-10 are faster.
- Tip: start in Cut mode with Delta on to hear exactly which clicks it's catching, then set the band sensitivities.
What producers say
Widely respected, though reviewers agree it takes time to learn.
- Sound On Sound (Neil Rogers, 2019) praised its "very detailed adaptive control" and the Delta control, especially for softening harsh transients and taming plosives.
- MusicTech (2019, MT Choice) found it catches sharper, faster clicks than Neutron's Transient Shaper, with a pleasing rounding effect.
- Produce Like A Pro (2023) showed it removing mouth noise, softening pick attack and even making an electric bass sound fretless.
- Gripes: not always obvious what it's doing, can't boost and cut in one instance, higher CPU at the Ultra quality setting, and less convincing on individual live drum tracks than on loops.
