What it does
Magnetic is a reel-to-reel tape warmer inspired by well-known tape machines. The developer pitches it as "a versatile color tool" that brings the low-end weight and harmonic character of tape to any channel, bus or master.
- Ten tape models: ten tape characters to pick from; the product page does not name the machines behind them.
- Tape compression and saturation: the core of the plugin, adding the soft compression, thickening and harmonics of driven tape.
- Wow and flutter: adds the slow and fast pitch wobble of an old machine, for a more worn, vintage feel.
- Tone control: shapes the overall frequency balance after the tape stage.
- Simple layout: a short set of essential controls, meant for quick color rather than detailed machine calibration.
- Oversampling: a KVR user review mentions 4x oversampling by default, which can be lowered to save CPU.
Version 3 has a release date of 27 October 2025. It is often discounted, is part of the Magnetics Bundle and the Integral Studio Pack, and KVR lists a demo.

When to use it
Magnetic is a quick, low-cost tape warmer for adding color with a few controls. Compared with Universal Audio's Ampex ATR-102, it does not model one machine in depth and has no calibration or tape-formula settings, but it costs far less. Computer Music found an earlier version less refined than UA's Studer A800, while still praising it as a thickening tool. Next to Soundtoys Decapitator it is gentler, aimed at tape warmth rather than heavy distortion. Compared with Klanghelm's SDRR or u-he Satin, it offers fewer options but gets to a usable sound faster.
- Best for: subtle tape warmth on buses and masters, and heavier color and pumping on drums, bass and synths.
- Genres: any; especially rock, pop, hip-hop and lo-fi where tape color suits the sound.
- Look elsewhere if: you want detailed machine calibration (Ampex ATR-102 or Satin) or strong distortion (Decapitator).
- Tip: if CPU use is high, lower the oversampling; one KVR user found it still sounds good at 1x.
What producers say
Reviewers like it as an easy, unobtrusive warming tool rather than a precise machine model.
- Computer Music (via MusicRadar, 2011, first version) said it is "not the last word in tape emulation" but "really shines" as an analog thickener, praising the tape speeds, color and ease of use.
- KVR users rate it 4 out of 5 from 3 reviews; one (2013) said it "warms and colors your mix in a non-obtrusive way", another (2022) praised its vintage sound on masters.
- Criticisms: Computer Music missed tape hiss and separate input and output gain in the first version; a 2024 KVR user found CPU use high at the default 4x oversampling.
