What it does
Devastator is NoiseAsh's lo-fi distortion plugin, billed as "the sweetest destroyer". It puts the common lo-fi tools, bit reduction, sample rate reduction and analog-style saturation, behind a small set of direct controls.
- Bit and sample reduction: Bit Reduction and Sample Amount controls, from crisp low-resolution sound to extreme low-bit distortion and vintage chip-style tones.
- Saturation and distortion: vintage analog-style saturation plus a separate distortion algorithm, with several degrade tones of different character.
- Solid-state EQ: low- and high-shelf EQ for tone shaping after the damage.
- Filters: low- and high-pass filters to thin the result or tame harsh aliasing highs.
- Mono and stereo: separate mono and stereo versions, and every control can be automated for use on single tracks or full mixes.
- Interface: resizable GUI; the developer describes it as CPU-efficient.
The demo is fully functional with no time limit, but the output mutes briefly every 30 seconds.
When to use it
Devastator is the quick, cheap option for lo-fi grit: bitcrushing, sample rate reduction and saturation on one simple panel. Compared with Decimort 2, it does not model specific vintage samplers or offer Decimort's detailed anti-alias and dither options, so it is less suited to faithful SP-1200 or Akai-style coloring. It is far narrower than Saturn 2 or iZotope Trash, which offer many distortion types and multiband processing, but it is faster to dial in. Against D16's Devastor 2, it trades filter-driven aggression for bitcrushing.
- Best for: bitcrushed drums, degraded vocals, chiptune-style synths and lo-fi texture on a bus.
- Genres: lo-fi, hip-hop, chiptune and electronic.
- Look elsewhere if: you want accurate vintage sampler emulation (Decimort 2) or multiband distortion with many types (Saturn 2).
