What it does
Action Filter is NoiseAsh's dual multimode filter for creative sound shaping. It pairs a set of analog and digital filter models with a per-module modulation system, aiming for "simplified controls, lots of creative possibilities".
- 13 filter models: Moog Classic LP; State Variable LP, HP, BP and Notch; Four Pole Ladder LP; One Pole Ladder LP and HP; Biquad LP, High Resonance LP and HP; Allpass; and a Ring Mode.
- Two filter modules: two independent multimode filters running in series, each with its own model choice and controls.
- Seven modulation shapes: each module has its own modulator with saw, square, triangle and sine waves, a randomizer, a drawable custom envelope and a 32-step sequencer.
- Sync or free: every modulation source can lock to host tempo or run freely, so sweeps can follow the beat or drift.
- Saturation: a vintage analog saturation stage for adding drive and warmth around the filters.
- Interface: a resizable GUI and a CPU-efficient engine, built so the main moves are quick to reach.
It is often discounted. The demo is fully functional with no time limit but mutes the output briefly every 30 seconds.
When to use it
Action Filter is the pick when you want two classic filter types in a row with tempo-synced movement, at a low price. Compared with FabFilter Volcano 3 it is simpler: two filters in fixed series instead of flexible routing, but with a built-in 32-step sequencer and drawable envelope per module. Next to Soundtoys FilterFreak it offers more filter models, from Moog-style ladder to allpass and ring mode, though FilterFreak is the more established choice for analog-modelled character. Unlike Sugar Bytes WOW2 it has no vowel or morphing filters, so it is a more straightforward sweep-and-sequence tool. The free, unlimited demo makes it easy to try before buying.
- Best for: rhythmic filter sweeps and sequenced gating on synths, pads, drums and loops, and adding ladder-filter grit with the saturation stage.
- Genres: electronic, house and techno, hip-hop and pop.
- Look elsewhere if: you need parallel routing or more than two filters (Volcano 3) or vowel and morphing filters (WOW2).
