Cursus Vereor is a Noise Engineering synth that generates oscillator waveforms on the fly and shapes them with a wavefolder, an ADSR and a VCA/lowpass gate section.
It adds a vintage-style chorus, LFOs and macros, polyphonic aftertouch, 1,000+ presets and a random patch generator, for $49.
Best for: Keys & Synths, Bass, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM.
Keywords: randomize, macro controls, modulation matrix, polyphonic, preset-driven, vintage, simple, experimental, basses, beginner-friendly, evolving, gentle, gritty, harsh, leads, modular, oversampling, pads, perpetual licence, plucks, sound design, spectral.
What it does
Cursus Vereor is a spectral synth from Noise Engineering, built for sounds that are "gentle, harsh, melodic, distorted, or anything in between". It grew out of the developer's Eurorack hardware (Sound On Sound traces it to the Cursus Iteritas oscillator), and its waveforms are generated on the fly rather than read from wavetables.
- Three algorithms: Fourier, Walsh and Daubechies, each building harmonics in its own way; you can modulate between them.
- Shaping controls: Center, Width, Tilt, Parity, Fold and Edge sculpt the spectrum, with an oversampled wavefolder for extra bite.
- Dynamics: an ADSR envelope with curve shaping driving a VCA and lowpass gate section.
- Chorus: a vintage-inspired, two-stage chorus that reviewers singled out as powerful.
- Modulation: four LFOs and four Macros routed through a modulation matrix, set up from right-click menus, plus MIDI learn on every parameter.
- Playing: velocity and polyphonic aftertouch are supported.
- Presets: 1,000+ presets and a Rand button that randomises the patch, moving the sliders so you can keep tweaking from there.
It comes with free lifetime updates (older versions are not provided) and was also sold in Plugin Bundle 1.

When to use it
Cursus Vereor is a focused, one-character synth rather than a workstation. Compared with Serum 2 or Vital, it has no wavetable editor, samples or deep routing, but its Fourier, Walsh and Daubechies algorithms and wavefolder give harmonics those synths don't easily produce, and Tape Op noted that one slider can drive "incredibly complicated outcomes". It is far simpler to steer than Phase Plant or Pigments 7, and its lowpass gate gives it a West Coast flavour none of them is built around. Pick it for that sound; pick a larger synth for broad preset coverage across genres.
- Best for: folded leads, plucky lowpass-gate tones, gritty bass, and evolving chords and pads.
- Genres: electronic, techno, IDM, ambient and experimental.
- Look elsewhere if: you need wavetables, samples or complex routing (Vital, Phase Plant), or classic analog emulation (Diva).
- Tip: hit Rand for a starting point, then refine with the six shaping sliders, since the randomiser moves them to its new settings.
What producers say
Reviewers were impressed by how much sound comes from a simple panel, with only the modulation matrix taking some getting used to.
- Sound On Sound (William Stokes, 2022) praised "a satisfying workflow that discourages random parameter fiddling", the rich algorithms and the powerful chorus, in a bundle review recommended for newcomers and hardware owners alike.
- Tape Op (Brian Bender) said it hides complex synthesis behind an interface like a classic subtractive synth and keeps rewarding experimentation.
- Criticisms: Sound On Sound found the modulation matrix needs some acclimatisation before it feels intuitive.
