Massive XL is Native Instruments' successor to Massive X: a wavetable synth with open routing, a Preset Generator that builds editable patches from an audio file, Mutator and Randomizer tools and polyphonic aftertouch.
$99 introductory price until 31 Dec 2026, then $199; Massive X and Massive owners get upgrade pricing.
Best for: Keys & Synths, Bass, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Hip-Hop & Trap, Pop.
Keywords: wavetable, drag-and-drop routing, randomize, polyphonic, basses, undo/redo, evolving, leads, macro controls, pads, preset-driven, sidechain input, simple, sound design, subscription.
What it does
Massive XL is the latest generation of Native Instruments' flagship synth and the successor to Massive X. It keeps X's wavetable engine and open routing, redesigns the interface, and adds tools for getting to a sound faster. NI pitches it as a synth that "hits hard fast, then keeps opening up".
- Wavetable oscillators: ten oscillator modes, shown in a single-oscillator Focus view or the original two-oscillator layout.
- Tables: 100+ new wavetables (including original-Massive and PPG tables) and 100+ noise tables; you can now import wavetables or make them from samples.
- Open routing: oscillators, noise, filters, inserts, phase modulation and feedback chain in any order.
- Preset Generator: analyses an audio clip (with stem separation) and returns four editable presets; a Match/Imagine slider sets how closely they follow it.
- Mutator and Randomizer: the Mutator swaps a patch's building blocks using other presets in your library, the Randomizer changes only their settings; both can lock what you want to keep.
- Morpher and Animator: performable movement that can be locked, carried across presets and reused.
- Modulation: drag-and-drop envelopes, LFOs, sidechain, drawn Performer curves and Trackers, 16 macros; modulators animate on the knobs they drive.
- Effects and workflow: Raum, Replika Shimmer and Tape Wobble built in; saveable sub-presets for filters, effects and modulators; undo history; hover help; polyphonic aftertouch.
It ships with 1,000 presets and loads Massive X presets and Expansions. A Massive XL Player version plays presets without the Mutator or Preset Generator. There is upgrade pricing for Massive X and Massive owners, and NI says it joins the 360 subscription in 2027.

When to use it
Massive XL suits Massive X users and anyone who wants a deep wavetable synth that also helps them start: its Preset Generator, Mutator and Morpher have no equivalent built into Serum 2, Pigments 7 or Phase Plant. Compared with Massive X it adds wavetable import, three effects, poly aftertouch, visible modulation and undo while keeping X's sound and presets, so for most owners it replaces X. It is far more flexible than the original Massive, but not the same lean bass machine. Next to Serum 2 and Pigments 7 it is still one wavetable engine with no wavetable editor.
- Best for: growling basses, evolving leads and pads, and turning a reference sound into an editable starting patch.
- Genres: dubstep and bass music, EDM, electro, trap and modern pop production.
- Look elsewhere if: you want several synthesis engines (Pigments 7, Phase Plant), detailed wavetable editing (Serum 2), or the classic Massive sound at low CPU (Massive).
- Tip: mutate one module at a time to keep the parts of a patch you like, and use the mutation history to step back.
What producers say
Early reviews call it the sequel Massive X should have been: more fun and playable, but an evolution rather than a new kind of synth.
- CDM (first impressions) said it "makes everything fun again", singling out the similarity-aware mutations and Chord Morph.
- Synth Anatomy called wavetable import "a turning point for Massive" and found the Preset Generator "impressively good" on simple sounds, weaker on mixed material.
- Criticisms: Synth Anatomy found the interface better but "far from being great", missed a wavetable editor, and measured CPU use no lower than Massive X.
