What it does
Nexus (full name Nexus Subhost/Standalone Plugins Host) is a host for other plugins. It runs as a plugin inside a DAW, so you can build chains of third-party plugins within one slot, or on its own as a standalone app.
- Third-party plugins: loads VST, VST3 and AU plugins and instruments, sorted by a plugin manager by format and category.
- Canvas routing: design the signal path visually and wire plugins in any combination, with signal splitter, mixer and crossover modules for parallel and multiband chains.
- Scenes: each preset holds eight scenes of plugin states and connections, switched manually or by MIDI.
- Program changes: presets can be selected with MIDI program change messages, for use with foot controllers live.
- Control: all parameters can be automated in the DAW, and MIDI control surfaces are supported.
- Built-in plugins: includes its own effects and tools for immediate use.
The current version is 1.1.8, and it was on sale when checked.

When to use it
Nexus is the better pick when you want a free-form chain of third-party plugins that works both inside a DAW and as a standalone live rig. Unlike Multipass and Effect Rack, which only host their own developer's effects, it loads any VST, VST3 or AU plugin. Compared with Blue Cat's PatchWork, which arranges plugins in serial and parallel slots, it uses an open canvas with splitter, mixer and crossover modules. Unlike Gig Performer, which is a standalone live host, it also runs as a plugin inside your DAW, and its eight scenes per preset cover live switching.
- Best for: live guitar rigs switched by MIDI, and parallel or multiband chains of third-party plugins inside one DAW slot.
- Genres: any.
- Look elsewhere if: your DAW already has flexible routing and you don't play live, or you need a dedicated live host with set lists (Gig Performer).
