A free noise gate from Nembrini Audio's Analog Rack series, tuned for guitar and bass.

It runs the signal through a virtual tube preamp circuit, so it colors the tone as well as cutting noise.

What it does

Analog Rack Noise Gate is a free rack-style gate that Nembrini Audio describes as "especially tuned for guitar and bass." Besides cutting noise between notes, it runs the signal through a virtual tube preamp for some color.

Instrument tuning: set up for cleaning hum and hiss from guitar and bass, for example before or after an amp sim.
Tube preamp circuit: a custom virtual tube preamp stage adds analog-style coloration to the gated signal.
Simple layout: a deliberately very simple gate in the rack-style Analog Rack panel, meant to be quick to set.
Part of a set: one of four free Analog Rack effects (with Delay, Chorus and Cleaner) in the 13-plugin Analog Rack FX Bundle, whose other nine effects are paid.

When to use it

Analog Rack Noise Gate is a pick for guitarists whose amp sim has no gate built in, or who want a separate free gate with a bit of tube color. Compared with FabFilter Pro-G or Oxford Drum Gate 2 it is far simpler, with no detailed sidechain keying, ducking or visual display, and it is not aimed at drums. Unlike smart:gate it does no automatic, source-aware setup, but it costs nothing and is quick to dial in. Its tube stage means it is not fully transparent, which suits guitar more than a clean mix bus.

Best for: removing hum and hiss from high-gain guitar and bass tracks.
Genres: rock and metal.
Look elsewhere if: you need sidechain keying or detailed control for gating drums; Pro-G or Oxford Drum Gate 2 do that.
