MF-107S FreqBox is Moog's software version of the FreqBox Moogerfooger, a voltage-controlled oscillator that is synced and modulated by the input.

It turns guitar, synths or other sources into new synth-like tones, and costs $79.

Best for: Guitars, Keys & Synths, Bass, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Rock & Indie, Ambient & Cinematic.

Keywords: synths, bass, electric guitar, creative, drums, experimental, sound design, vocals, destructive, extreme, mixing, modular.

What it does

The MF-107S FreqBox is Moog's plugin version of the MF-107 Moogerfooger pedal, which Moog calls "a direct descendant of the original Moog modular synthesizers." Instead of only processing the input, it adds a synth oscillator that the input signal syncs, modulates and drives: in Moog's words, "a box of gnarly synced VCO sounds."

It is also part of Moog's bundle of seven Moogerfooger plugins.

When to use it

FreqBox is the pick when you want to generate new, synth-like sound from an input rather than run it through a chain of effects. Compared with Infiltrator 2 or Multipass, it does one thing, with no effect chain, filters or modular routing, but its synced and FM oscillator tones are something those multi-effects don't offer in the same form. It behaves somewhat like a distortion with a much more synthetic, unpredictable character. Next to Effect Rack, it is narrower in scope but far stranger in sound.

What producers say

Reviewers found it wild and creative, but hard to control for conventional music.
