MF-105S MuRF by Moog

MF-105S MuRF is Moog's software version of the Multiple Resonance Filter Array, an 8-band resonant filter bank driven by patterns.

Built-in and custom patterns animate the bands in time, and it costs $79.

Best for: Keys & Synths, Guitars, Sound Design, Drums. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Ambient & Cinematic, Rock & Indie.

Keywords: rhythmic, electric guitar, bass, wide, drums, experimental, mixing, sound design, pads.

What it does

MF-105S is Moog's software re-creation of the MF-105 MuRF (Multiple Resonance Filter) pedal from 2004. It combines "a resonant filter bank with a pattern generator and skewing envelope" to animate incoming audio, and Moog says it also captures how the original's controls interact.

When to use it

MuRF is the pick for a specific sound: eight resonant bands stepping in patterns, which gives a rhythmic, shimmering animation that a single sweeping filter can't. Compared with FilterShaper XL and WOW2, it has much less modulation routing and no MIDI control, but it has a distinct analog-pedal character. Unlike FilterFreak or Volcano 3, it is not a general-purpose filter you can sweep and automate precisely. It works best as a colour effect on guitar or as a texture layer, rather than as a utility filter.

What producers say

Sound On Sound liked it as the most experimental of the Moogerfooger plugins, with a few practical limits.
