What it does
MF-102S is Moog's software recreation of the MF-102 Moogerfooger Ring Modulator pedal from 1998. The aim is to capture "the spaced-out, retro-futuristic sound" of the original, along with the way its controls interact.
- Ring modulator and carrier: the input is multiplied by a voltage-controlled carrier oscillator, from slow tremolo-like movement to clangorous, inharmonic tones.
- Carrier Type switch: run the carrier in mono or stereo, with panning and a reverse (phase) option for wider stereo effects.
- LFO: a dual-waveform, voltage-controlled LFO that sweeps the carrier, switchable between bipolar and unipolar polarity.
- CV inputs: virtual CV inputs for Carrier Frequency, LFO Rate, LFO Amount and Mix, each with its own attenuverter, so other Moogerfooger plugins can modulate it.
- Carrier input: an independent carrier input, so an external signal can replace the internal oscillator.
- Software extras: stereo operation, full DAW automation, presets and multiple instances, none of which the hardware pedal offered.
The store page does not mention a demo.
When to use it
MF-102S is a dedicated ring modulator with Moog's character, and it is the better pick when you want that one effect done the analog way rather than as a module in a larger tool. Compared with ShaperBox 3 and Portal, it has a much narrower scope: no step-sequenced shapes, multiband splitting or granular processing, but a more direct, hands-on ring-mod sound. Unlike MicroShift or UberMod, it is built around the carrier oscillator, so it moves from tremolo to metallic, bell-like tones rather than shifting pitch, chorusing or adding modulated delays. Its CV inputs make it most useful alongside other Moogerfooger plugins, where one can modulate another. It costs more than many ring-mod modules, so it suits players who want the pedal's feel in the box.
- Best for: metallic and bell-like tones, robotic vocals, sirens and trills, and tremolo on synths and guitar.
- Genres: electronic, cinematic, experimental rock and psychedelic.
- Look elsewhere if: you need rhythmic, sequenced modulation or many effects in one plugin; ShaperBox 3 or Portal fit better.
