What it does
Milkman Pop Top Boost is a boost plugin "inspired by the classic American recording consoles of the 1970's". MixWave pitches it as a way to bring out a source's detail and some of that classic record-production sound, in a more guitar-friendly package.
- Console-style boost: modeled on the gain stages of 1970s American recording consoles rather than on a classic guitar pedal.
- Six op-amps: modeled with six different op-amps, each giving the boost its own flavour.
- Single-knob operation: the boost is run from one main control, so it is quick to set.
- Mono and stereo: works on mono and stereo tracks.
- Guitar-friendly: designed to sit before amps and amp sims, enhancing the subtle details of the signal rather than adding heavy distortion.
KVR lists version 1.0.3. It is part of the Milkman Creamer Collection. A 14-day free trial is available.
When to use it
Milkman Pop Top Boost is a small, single-purpose tool: a console-flavoured clean boost for pushing amps and adding a touch of colour. Compared with Decapitator, it is far subtler, with no hardware style menu or heavy drive, and it is much cheaper. Next to Saturation Knob, which is also a one-knob saturator, it is aimed more at guitar rigs and adds a choice of op-amp flavours. Unlike Radiator, which models a tube mixer with tone controls, it stays in solid-state console territory.
- Best for: pushing amp sims and adding light console colour to guitar, bass or keys.
- Genres: rock, indie, country and pop.
- Look elsewhere if: you want strong saturation or distortion; Decapitator goes much further, and Radiator gives a tube colour instead.
