JHS Hard Drive by MixWave

An official JHS plugin that models the Hard Drive, which JHS calls its most aggressive distortion, aimed at 90s and 2000s alternative rock.

It has multiple gain stages, a hard limiter and a strong EQ, plus wet/dry mix and filters, for $36.75 on sale (normally $49).

Best for: Guitars, Bass, Keys & Synths, Drums. Genres: Rock & Indie, Metal.

Keywords: aggressive, built-in mix knob, electric guitar, bass, drums, parallel processing, 90s, Y2K, heavy, tight, circuit-modelled, clean, component-modelled, corrective, hardware emulation, mixing, simple, single-band, thin.

What it does

JHS Hard Drive is MixWave's model of "the most aggressive distortion JHS has ever made", aimed at the high-gain tones of 1990s and 2000s alternative rock. MixWave says it uses component-level modeling of the original pedal.

A 14-day fully working trial is available. It is also part of MixWave's JHS Loud Is More Good collection.

When to use it

JHS Hard Drive is the better pick when you want one high-gain pedal with a real-hardware feel, for alternative rock guitar or as a heavy parallel drive. Compared with FabFilter Saturn 2 or Output Thermal it does far less, with no multiband or modulation, but it is quicker to dial in and voiced specifically for guitar. Against Eventide CrushStation it is a more focused pedal model and less of a creative effects box. Its wet/dry mix and input and output filters make it easier to use on bass and drums than the hardware pedal.

What producers say

The only review found covers it within the Loud Is More Good collection: the tones were praised, while the collection as a whole was felt to be thin.
