What it does
Electrodyne 511 is MixWave's model of the Electrodyne EQ, a design from the company's 1960s transistor consoles, which the developer credits as "the very first to implement channel strips and automated faders." It is a two-band inductor EQ with wide, gentle curves, aimed at musical tone shaping rather than repair.
- High band: ±12 dB at 1.5, 3, 5 or 10 kHz, switchable between shelf and peak.
- Low band: ±12 dB at 40, 100, 250 or 500 Hz, also switchable between shelf and peak.
- Inductor curves: broad, low-Q filters modelled at component level; the hardware's stepped gain pots become smooth, continuous controls.
- EQ In switch: turns the EQ on and off while leaving the rest of the circuit in the path.
- Filters: high-pass and low-pass filters on the input and the output.
- Parallel mix: a dry/wet control for blending, and mono or stereo use.
A 14-day fully working trial is available.
When to use it
Electrodyne 511 is a quick, broad-stroke EQ: two bands, four frequencies each, and a shelf or peak choice. Compared with the Pultec Passive EQ Collection, it is simpler and has no tube stage, but it can peak in the mids as well as shelve, which a Pultec low band can't. It is close in spirit to Mäag Audio EQ4, another small musical EQ, though EQ4 is built around its Air band for top-end lift while the 511 works more evenly across lows and highs. Against Pro-Q 4 or TDR Nova it is far more limited, with no notches, no dynamic bands and no analyser, but it is faster to set by ear.
- Best for: broad tone moves on drums, vocals, guitars, piano and buses, with vintage console colour.
- Genres: any; it suits rock, soul and vintage-leaning pop especially well.
- Look elsewhere if: you need many bands, narrow cuts or dynamic EQ; Pro-Q 4 or TDR Nova do that.
