What it does
EHX Small Clone is MixWave's officially licensed model of the Electro-Harmonix analog chorus pedal, made with Electro-Harmonix using component-level modeling of its bucket-brigade circuit.
- Rate: sets the modulation speed, from slow movement to fast swirl.
- Depth switch: chooses between two depth settings, from subtle dimension to a deeper, liquid chorus.
- Fixed mix: as on the pedal, the wet/dry balance is fixed, so there are only two controls to set.
- Sound: analog bucket-brigade chorus with the small variations of the modeled circuit.
- Plugin extras: full automation, instant recall, and input and output filtering.
A 14-day fully working trial is available. It is also part of the EHX Classics Bundle.
When to use it
EHX Small Clone is the pick when you want the classic grunge and indie guitar chorus with almost nothing to set up. Compared with TriceraChorus and Chorus JUN-6 it has far fewer options, but it gets the swirly pedal sound in seconds. Syntorus 2 and Flex Chorus offer far more control; the Small Clone has just Rate and a two-position Depth switch, with no mix knob. On synths and mixes, TAL-Chorus-LX or Chorus JUN-6 fit better.
- Best for: chorused clean or driven guitar, bass chorus, and quick widening on keys.
- Genres: rock, indie, grunge, shoegaze and pop.
- Look elsewhere if: you want detailed modulation control (Syntorus 2) or a synth-style stereo chorus (Chorus JUN-6, TAL-Chorus-LX).
What producers say
Early press coverage likes the sound but notes how few controls it has.
- Sound On Sound (Paul White, EHX Classics Bundle review) praised the "lush chorus effect" and the subtle variations of the analog modeling.
- Criticisms: Sound On Sound wished MixWave had modeled the Clone Theory instead, for its extra adjustment.
