What it does
Centurion is MixWave's component-level model of a famous gold boost overdrive pedal. Its hard-clipping circuit uses low-gain germanium diodes for a midrange push, and the aim is the feel of a cranked amp at lower volume.
- Gain: sets the amount of overdrive, from a light push to full distortion.
- Treble: adjusts the high-frequency tone.
- Output: sets the output level.
- Dry/Wet: a plugin-only blend control for parallel overdrive.
- Filters: high-pass and low-pass filters at the input and output to trim the low end or fizz.
- Presets: a preset browser with artist presets from Charlie Robbins, Markojet and Taylor Larson.
MixWave pitches it for individual tracks, buses and full mixes as well as guitar. A 14-day fully working trial is available. KVR lists version 1.0.1.
When to use it
Centurion is the better pick when you want the transparent, mid-forward gold-boost style of drive rather than a coloured distortion. Compared with The Scream it keeps more low end and clarity, so it suits pushing an amp sim without the Tube Screamer's mid hump. It does far less than Saturn 2 or Thermal, with no multiband or modulation, but it is quicker to set and its Dry/Wet knob makes parallel drive on buses easy. Unlike Devil-Loc Deluxe it is not a crushing effect; it stays in overdrive territory.
- Best for: boosting amp sims, transparent overdrive on guitar and bass, and parallel grit on drum or vocal buses.
- Genres: rock, blues, indie and pop.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a mid-hump Tube Screamer tone (The Scream) or broad multiband saturation (Saturn 2).
