What it does

MWaveFolder is MeldaProduction's free wavefolding distortion, "an analog-inspired distortion module" that runs from mild harmonic enhancement to full sound destruction. Wavefolding bends the waveform back on itself instead of clipping it, which adds bright, synth-like harmonics.

Character: a Character control adds saturation in the style of analog hardware on top of the folding.
Dry/Wet: blend the folded signal with the dry one for subtle colour.
Upsampling: adjustable from 1x to 1024x, with minimum-phase and linear-phase algorithms, to keep aliasing down at heavy settings.
Gain control: automatic gain compensation that adapts to the settings, plus a safety brickwall limiter that keeps output under 0 dB.
Channel modes: mono, stereo and M/S processing, up to 8-channel surround and up to 64-channel ambisonics.
Workflow: MIDI learn, A to H switching between settings, A to D morphing on an X-Y pad, a global preset library and a resizable, GPU-accelerated GUI.

MWaveFolder is free and part of MeldaProduction's MFreeFXBundle. Updates are free for life. A multiband version, MWaveFolderMB, is sold separately.

When to use it

MWaveFolder is the better pick when you want wavefolding specifically, and want it free. Compared with FabFilter Saturn 2 or Minimal Audio Rift, it offers one kind of distortion rather than many styles and modulation options, so it is narrower but quicker to learn. Unlike D16 Decimort 2, which degrades sound through bit and sample-rate reduction, it adds bright folded harmonics while keeping the signal full. Its high upsampling options and M/S mode are unusual for a free distortion, which makes it a sensible way to try West-Coast-style folding on synths and drums before buying a larger tool.

Best for: bright harmonics on synths and basses, edgy drums and aggressive sound design.
Genres: electronic, EDM, techno, hip-hop and experimental.
Look elsewhere if: you want many distortion types or multiband processing in one plugin; Saturn 2 or Rift cover more, and MWaveFolderMB adds bands.
Tip: a KVR reviewer found it works best on synths and simple waveforms; use the Dry/Wet control when you only want a hint of folding.

What producers say

Feedback is sparse but positive, with the one KVR review giving full marks.

KVR users rate it 5 out of 5 from 1 review (2022, version 15.01). The reviewer called it "one of the best distortion plugins I've ever encountered" and praised its precise controls, the analog-style Character parameter, the Dry/Wet blend, automatic gain control and Mid/Side routing.
Usage: the same reviewer recommends it mainly for synthesizers and basic waveforms.
