MDynamicEq is a 5-band dynamic equalizer that can de-ess, duck, compress or expand individual frequency ranges.

It adds a simple four-knob mode, spectrum analyzer, sonogram, side-chain and mid-side processing, for $79.

Best for: Vocals, Mix Bus, Mastering, Drums, Acoustic Instruments. Genres: all genres.

Keywords: dynamic, multi-band, sidechain input, mid/side, built-in analyzer, downward expansion, drums, full mix, kick, steep learning curve, auto-gain, bass, bus processing, corrective, mastering, metering, mix bus, mixing, oversampling, simple, surgical, transparent, tube, vocals.

What it does

MeldaProduction calls MDynamicEq "the 2nd most powerful (dynamic) equalizer available", the step below its MAutoDynamicEq. It is a transparent equalizer whose bands can also act as compressors, expanders, de-essers or duckers.

Dynamic bands: 5 bands, each with 14 filter types: peak, two kinds of band-shelf, adjustable-slope and resonant shelves, slope filters, band-pass and notch.
Dynamics per band: de-essing, ducking, compression and expansion, so a band only moves when the signal crosses its threshold.
Filters: built-in high-pass and low-pass filters with variable slopes.
Easy screen: a simplified 4-knob interface for common tasks.
Analysis: spectrum analyzer with peak detection and a high-resolution sonogram, plus gain reduction and side-chain meters.
Routing: multiband side-chain, mid/side, separate left and right, surround up to 8 channels and ambisonics up to 64 channels.
Extras: a tube saturation simulator, 1x to 4x upsampling, automatic gain compensation, a safety limiter and A-H comparison slots.

A free trial is available, and it can be upgraded to MAutoDynamicEq. Updates are free for life.

When to use it

MDynamicEq is the pick for a cheap, deep dynamic EQ when five dynamic bands are enough. Compared with FabFilter Pro-Q 4, it has fewer bands and a busier workflow, but more filter shapes per band plus saturation and modulators at a lower price. It covers similar ground to Waves F6 Floating-Band Dynamic EQ, with mid/side and multiband side-chain on board. TDR Nova does the basic dynamic EQ job for free, so MDynamicEq earns its price through the extra filter types, the sonogram and its surround modes.

Best for: taming harsh frequencies only when they appear, de-essing, and ducking a bass range when the kick hits.
Genres: any style.
Look elsewhere if: you need more than five dynamic bands or a faster, more polished workflow; Pro-Q 4 does both. For a free option, use TDR Nova.
Tip: the reviewer at Review Revival suggests starting from the "Bass vs. Bass Drum" preset for low-end separation, and shift-clicking a node to change only its gain.

What producers say

The one detailed review found it a powerful, good-value tool that rewards time spent learning it.

Review Revival (2013) called it a "GO TO" EQ and praised its five bands, value and side-chain ducking, but noted a learning curve.
Tips from the review: explore the side-chain and ducking presets, and set up multiparameters to move several bands at once.
