Doctor Mix AI Synth is a free monophonic synthesizer whose DSP code was generated by ChatGPT.
It is a small experiment rather than a production synth, with basic oscillator and envelope controls, and it costs nothing.
Best for: Keys & Synths, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM.
Keywords: AI/machine learning, free, monophonic, simple, experimental, sound design.
What it does
Doctor Mix AI Synth is a free, deliberately simple mono synth made by Martinic with the YouTuber Doctor Mix to answer one question: "Can ChatGPT build a synthesizer?" ChatGPT wrote the core sound code, and Martinic's developers turned it into a working plugin.
- Origin: ChatGPT first refused the request, then produced code for a basic sine wave synth built on the WDL-OL framework.
- Oscillator: a single basic oscillator at the heart of the sound, true to that original sine wave code.
- Filter: a filter to shape the tone, also written with ChatGPT's help.
- Envelope: an amplitude envelope for the attack and release of each note.
- Playing: monophonic, played from MIDI like any other instrument plugin.
- Human part: Martinic merged the AI code with its own additions, built the interface and compiled it into the plugin formats.
Version 1.2.3 is free, as a download from Martinic's website.
When to use it
Doctor Mix AI Synth is a curiosity more than a production tool, and its appeal is the story of how it was made. Compared with Vital, which is also free, it has none of the wavetables, modulation or effects; Vital is the far better free synth for real work. It is even plainer than a basic free synth like TAL-NoiseMaker, with one simple voice and a few controls. Next to Serum 2 or Diva it is not in the same league at all. Grab it if you are curious about AI-written audio code or want a very basic mono tone with zero learning curve.
- Best for: simple mono tones, teaching the basics of a synth voice, and exploring what AI-generated DSP sounds like.
- Genres: electronic and experimental.
- Look elsewhere if: you need a synth for real production work; Vital is free and does far more.
What producers say
The press treated it as a notable first, while KVR users found it too basic to be useful.
- MusicRadar (2023) called it "far from the most powerful free VST synth plugin" but credited it as the first synth co-developed by AI.
- KVR users rate it 1.67 out of 5 from 3 reviews; one called the sound "boring to the max" while granting that it is free.
- Criticisms: one KVR reviewer objected that ChatGPT draws on open-source code without honouring its licences; another felt the world has no shortage of plugins.
