Sumu by Madrona Labs

Sumu is a patchable additive and FM synth from Madrona Labs, built around resynthesis with up to 64 partials per sound.

Every patch cord carries 64 channels, so each partial can be modulated and moved in a 3D field on its own. It costs $179 and has a demo mode.

Best for: Keys & Synths, Sound Design. Genres: Ambient & Cinematic, Electronic & EDM.

Keywords: additive, FM, evolving, sound design, cinematic, creative, inspired by, pads, sequencer, textures, visual feedback.

What it does

Sumu is Madrona Labs' synth for "additive + FM soundscapes": each sound is made of up to 64 partials, and every patch cord carries a separate signal for each partial, so you can modulate them one by one.

Version 1.3.0. The demo has a reminder sound about every minute and no patch saving.

When to use it

Sumu is the pick when you want to treat every partial as its own voice and patch slowly morphing, spatial sounds from them. Compared with Native Instruments Razor and the harmonic engine in Pigments 7, which also work with partials, Sumu is far more open: per-partial modulation, 3D placement and resynthesis of your own audio. It is less suited to fast preset browsing than Pigments 7 or Omnisphere 3. Within Madrona's range it is the most expensive and the deepest, against Aalto's simpler single-voice patching and Kaivo's granular and physical modeling.

What producers say

Early reviews see Sumu as a unique and rewarding sound-design synth that asks for some synthesis knowledge.
