Omega 2 - Model 458a by Kush Audio

Omega 2 - Model 458a emulates a vintage Altec preamp with a growling, dirty low end and a crisp, slurred 3-8 kHz range.

It adds gritty warmth with a compressed feel, plus filters, blend and gain-staging meters, for $39.

Best for: Drums, Bass, Vocals, Guitars. Genres: Rock & Indie, Hip-Hop & Trap, Lo-Fi.

Keywords: gritty, bass, drums, hardware emulation, vocals, dirty, metering, crisp, vintage, warm, kick, snare, 50s, electric guitar, lo-fi, low latency, mixing, oversampling, parallel processing, perpetual licence, resizable UI, single-band, subscription, utility.

What it does

Omega 2 - Model 458a is Kush Audio's saturation plugin modelled on an old Altec preamp, rebuilt from the original Omega 458a. Kush calls it "Pure Grunge": gritty warmth and presence without hard edges, compressing as you push it.

A perpetual licence with free updates and all presets is available, with an upgrade licence offered. There is a 10-day demo, and it is also part of Kush's subscription to all its plugins.

When to use it

The 458a is the pick when you want a single, characterful tube-preamp grit rather than a toolbox of saturation types. Compared with Decapitator it has one fixed voice instead of five styles, but its XY filters make it quicker to aim that voice at a frequency range. It is dirtier and more forward than Klanghelm IVGI, and far cheaper than the HG-2, though it lacks that unit's separate saturation stages. Within the Omega 2 range it is the grungiest model; the A and N models are gentler.

What producers say

Reviews of the original Omega 458a were very positive about the sound; the main gripes, CPU use and no mix control, predate Omega 2's added blend control.
