What it does
Kush Audio's AR-1 is a variable-mu tube compressor emulating hardware used at Abbey Road Studios. The developer highlights the "sweet breakup" of its tubes driven hard, alongside gentle settings.
- Attack and release: continuously variable rather than stepped, with tapers tuned for musical response.
- Range: from light levelling to heavy, tube-driven compression.

When to use it
AR-1 is for the smooth, thick sound of vari-mu compression. It is slower and softer than an 1176-style limiter and more coloured than a clean digital compressor like FabFilter's Pro-C 3.
- Best for: vocals, buses and full mixes where you want thickness and gentle breakup.
- Genres: rock, pop, singer-songwriter, and mastering-style glue.
