Krotos Studio is a subscription sound design tool with a library of royalty-free sound effects that you perform and shape with X/Y pads.

It also offers Video to Sound, which analyses footage and generates matching effects. It runs standalone or as a plugin, with plans from $9.99 a month billed annually.

Best for: Sound Design. Genres: Ambient & Cinematic.

Keywords: subscription, post-production, risers & hits, sound design, podcast, beginner-friendly, broadcast, preset-driven, sample-based, simple, standalone app.

What it does

Krotos Studio is a performable sound-effects tool: you pick a preset from a built-in library and shape it live, rather than searching for and editing recordings. Krotos pitches it as a way to "create and customise royalty-free sound effects" in sync with picture.

Library: category-based presets such as ambiences, footsteps, Foley, whooshes and weapons, with new sounds added every month. Sound On Sound counted 40+ ambience presets in early 2024.
X/Y performance: each preset is shaped in real time on X/Y pads and trigger keys; the axes are context-sensitive, so in a weapon preset the Y axis sets distance.
Record and drag: performances are recorded in the background while you tweak, then dragged straight onto a DAW or video timeline.
Video to Sound: analyses footage between set in and out points, lets you choose the elements to sound, and renders matching effects to the timeline in sync; it also runs as a plugin for Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve.
Own sounds (Pro and up): import up to 6,000 sounds per preset, build a personal library and get full stem access.
MIDI control: presets can be played from a MIDI controller for hands-on performance.

It is subscription only, in Studio, Pro (adding commercial and broadcast rights) and Max (adding 60,000+ sound effects and Krotos' Dehumaniser, Reformer and Weaponiser plugins) tiers. There is a 5-day free trial.

When to use it

Krotos Studio is the better pick when you need finished, synced effects for video fast and don't want to own or manage a library. Unlike Kontakt 8 or CR8 Creative Sampler, it is not a general instrument sampler: you can't build multisampled instruments, and its presets are designed for Foley and effects rather than music. Compared with Krotos' own Reformer Pro, a one-off purchase for performing your own recordings, Studio rents you a ready-made, growing library and adds Video to Sound and timeline tools. Its stereo-only output (as Sound On Sound found in 2024) and subscription model make it a weaker fit for large film mixes than a full sound-effects library.

Best for: quick Foley, ambiences, footsteps and whooshes for video, YouTube, games and podcasts.
Genres: film, video, game and podcast sound rather than music.
Look elsewhere if: you want a perpetual licence or to perform your own library (Reformer Pro), or a music sampler (Kontakt 8, TAL-Sampler).
Tip: map the X/Y pads to a MIDI controller and perform the effect against picture in one pass, then drag the recording to the timeline.

What producers say

Sound On Sound found it an easy, good-sounding tool for newcomers and indie creators, but too limited for major productions.

Sound On Sound (John Walden, January 2024) praised the intuitive category layout, the quality of most content, the X/Y and trigger-key control and the record-and-drag workflow.
Criticisms: stereo-only output with no surround, a thin vehicle category (three presets at the time), the subscription model and the need to be online for authentication.
