What it does
Dehumaniser Simple Monsters is the quick, stripped-down version of Krotos' Dehumaniser 2 creature-voice processor: "where simplicity meets power." You speak or perform into it and five macro controls turn the voice into a monster, alien or growling beast in real time.
- Five macro controls: Size, Fury, Age, Wildness and Character, each steering several processes inside the plugin at once.
- Two layouts: a slider view for setting each control directly, or X/Y pads that move two controls together so you can find sweet spots by ear.
- Scrubbing Convolution Module: a sample player with 48 animal sounds that are scrubbed and convolved with your voice, adding breath, texture and organic movement to the effect.
- Presets: 35 presets in three categories: Dialogue, Sci-fi, and Growls and Roars.
- Live use: it processes in real time, so voice actors can hear the monster while recording; TouchOSC templates allow remote control from a tablet or phone in the booth.
- Content: 47 sounds, processing at 44.1 to 192 kHz, 24-bit.
A 10-day trial is available, and it is sold as a perpetual licence.
When to use it
Simple Monsters is the pick when you want convincing creature voices fast and do not want to build a processing chain. Compared with Dehumaniser 2 it gives up the complex custom chains and takes far less time to learn, getting most monster voices from five controls at a much lower price. Unlike iZotope VocalSynth 2 or Little AlterBoy, which are general vocal-mangling and pitch tools for music, it is tuned for dialogue that stays intelligible while sounding big and animal-like, and its animal-sample convolution adds a breathy, organic layer they lack. Unlike VocalSynth 2, though, it has no robot or vocoder-style voices, so it is weaker for synthetic, machine-like characters.
- Best for: fast monster, creature and alien voices for games, film, animation and video, including live processing while a voice actor records.
- Genres: cinematic, game audio and animation rather than music production.
- Look elsewhere if: you need complex custom chains (Dehumaniser 2), robot and vocoder voices (VocalSynth 2), or simple musical pitch and formant shifts (Little AlterBoy).
- Tip: use the X/Y pads to move two controls together while listening, then add an animal sample in the Scrubbing Convolution Module to make the result feel alive.
What producers say
Reviewers found it easy, fun and convincing for its price; the main reservations are the lack of robot voices and artefacts at extreme settings.
- Mix (Rob Tavaglione, 2018) found it "even more fun" than Dehumaniser 2, praising the quick, intuitive sliders, the X/Y grids and the sample player, which he said not to underestimate.
- The Audio Spotlight (Martin Krause) rated it 4.5 out of 5, calling it "easy to use, fun to play with" and noting that voices stay intelligible even at extreme pitch shifts; he liked the TouchOSC control for booth sessions.
- Criticisms: The Audio Spotlight missed a built-in robotisation mode, heard artefacts at extreme settings, and found the price steep at first, though justified.
