What it does
Knifonium is Brainworx's model of a rare tube-based analog synthesizer designed by Jonte Knif. Plugin Alliance says it was personally approved by Knif and goes beyond the original hardware.
- Tube engine: up to 8 voices, with up to 208 modeled vacuum tubes across two tube-driven oscillators and a 4th-order ladder filter.
- Sound shaping: ring modulator, plus built-in phaser, EQ and waveshaper effects.
- Performance: an arpeggiator with panning functions, mid/side processing and stereo enhancement.
- Extras: over 300 presets and Brainworx Tolerance Modeling, which adds the small unit-to-unit variations of analog gear. Version 1.5.1; also included in the Plugin Alliance CORE and PRO subscriptions.

When to use it
Knifonium is a niche, character-first synth rather than an all-rounder like Serum 2 or Vital. The draw is its tube-driven oscillators and ladder filter, so it suits thick basses, leads and pads more than wavetable-style movement.
- Best for: warm, gritty monophonic-style leads and basses with a hardware feel.
- Look elsewhere if: you need wavetables, deep modulation routing or a huge sound library.
