What it does

Rum is Klevgrand's "Room Simulator" ("rum" is Swedish for room). It is built for short, natural room sound, making a dry track sound as if it were recorded in stereo from the other side of a real room.

Rooms: 10 recorded rooms with 6 variants each, from treated studio booths to spaces in an ordinary home: Hallway, two Bedrooms, Office, Studio A and B, Kitchen, Staircase, Corridor and Workshop.
Mics and character: omni and cardioid settings that can be combined, plus a Character switch for each room.
Stereo spread: three spread algorithms, with a modulation control.
Ducker: compresses the wet signal so transients don't push the room unnaturally.
Pre-delay: tempo-synced pre-delay to set the sense of distance.
Input and mix: input gain, low-cut and high-cut filters, a Fatness control and separate dry and wet knobs, plus factory presets.

The current version is 1.0.4. The free demo is the full version with occasional audio dropouts.

When to use it

Rum is the pick for quickly putting a dry track into a believable small room, with almost no setup. Compared with Valhalla Room, it is based on real recorded rooms and offers far less control over size and decay, but its room list is quicker to audition. Cinematic Rooms Professional and VintageVerb cover much larger spaces and long tails that Rum does not attempt. Its ducker is the standout feature for keeping room sound behind transients, and it is cheaper than most of those alternatives.

Best for: short room ambience on snare, electric guitars, vocals and virtual instruments when no room mics were recorded.
Genres: all genres.
Look elsewhere if: you need long halls, plates or lush tails; VintageVerb or Kleverb cover that.
Tip: Tape Op found it works well blended at about 20 to 50 percent wet, and suggests comparing Characters in the context of the mix.

What producers say

The one full review is positive, praising the ducker, the layout and the value.

Tape Op (Dave Hidek) called it "definitely worth checking out" at its price, praised the list-style room browser and the ducker for "a much smoother reverb sound", and singled out the Hallway room as "pretty magical".
In use: Tape Op found it made virtual instruments sound less "one-dimensional"; some controls only made sense once heard in the mix.
