The free little brother of MJUC: a vari-mu tube compressor with two gain stages and interstage transformer simulation.

A three-position timing switch sets attack and release as well as how the transformers and circuit generate harmonics, blending the characters of MJUC's Mk1 and Mk2.

Best for: Vocals, Drums, Bass, Drum Bus, Mix Bus. Genres: all genres.

Keywords: tube, vari-mu, transformer, bus processing, drums, free, bass, glue, vocals, hardware emulation, vintage, 50s, 60s, character-heavy, drum bus, full mix, mix bus, mixing, pumping, simple, single-band, smooth, thick.

What it does

MJUC jr. is a free "variable-tube" compressor, the little brother of MJUC. Klanghelm describes it as a vari-mu design "with lots of vibe," able to level smoothly or pump hard.

Two gain stages: with interstage transformer simulation for a deep, lively sound.
Three-position timing switch: sets attack and release and also the slew rate of the transformers and other circuit timing, which changes the harmonics.
Mk1/Mk2 blend: mixes the dense, natural compression of early vari-mu units with the more forward, harmonically rich 1960s style.
Simple controls: a compact, Fairchild-style layout aimed at quick results.

Version 1.5.0 is a free download.

When to use it

MJUC jr. is a good free choice when you want tube density and gentle glue from very few controls, and the full MJUC adds two more models. Like Analog Obsession MuChild, it is a free vari-mu option, while IK Multimedia Dyna-Mu and Universal Audio's Fairchild Tube Limiter Collection are paid alternatives with more controls.

Best for: vocals, drums and bass that need thickness, and light bus glue.
Genres: any; it leans warm and vintage.
Look elsewhere if: you need detailed attack and release settings or several characters; the full MJUC or DC8C do more.
Standout: the timing switch that changes both the compression speed and the harmonic character.

What producers say

KVR users rate it among the best free compressors; the few criticisms are about use on dense sources.

KVR users average 4.71/5 over seven reviews; one (2022) called it "comparable to best paid ones in the industry."
KVR (2022) another reviewer heard an "authentically tube-ish, harmonic MIRACLE" on drums and bought the full version.
Gripe: a 2020 reviewer said it "starts to sound unpleasant" on multiple sounds, and another preferred DC1A.
