What it does

Phase Distortion lets the signal modulate its own phase, which Kilohearts says gives something like feedback FM, so FM-style character can be added to any source.

Drive and Normalize: distortion amount and input gain compensation.
Tone and Bias: Tone filters the modulation to reduce high-frequency noise; Bias adds a constant phase offset to harmonics.
Spread: stereo effect from a left/right phase offset.
Sidechain: a secondary input can control the phase shift amount.

It's free and works as a plugin or a Snapin.

When to use it

A free, more unusual distortion that gives bell-like, metallic and FM-flavoured tones rather than the warm saturation of a tube-style plugin. Best for synths, bass and sound design in electronic music.
